1920: Body of Laurel soldier is laid to rest here

LAUREL- The first area soldier’s body was brought home from France when the body of Private William Stukas, who died in France Oct. 2, 1918, arrived in Laurel Monday evening by the Burlington, under the escort of Private C.M. Wall of Crook and was buried from the M.E. Church Tuesday afternoon with military honors.

Sixty-eight members of the American Legion escorted the body from the home to the church, six of their number all overseas men, acting as pallbearers.

They were Leslie Phillips, Verne Langford, Francis Paulson, Byron Jones, Will Griffin and Harry Smith.

Oct. 6, 1920

LAUREL- Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hyldahl arrived Monday noon from their visit to Denmark. In going they had quite an experience in delays. Arriving in New York they found a strike among the sailors on the vessel on which they were to sail and the boat couldn’t go.

After six weeks in New York City they managed to get passage. They left Laurel April 16, but did not arrive in Denmark until the last days of June.

Oct. 9, 1940

LAUREL- Joseph Artman of this city, veteran member of the Masonic Lodge will be honored at a meeting of the local lodge at the hall this week.

For 50 years, Artman has been a valued member of the order and has served faithfully in every position of the lodge.

LAUREL- J.W. Miller, owner of the Laurel Theatre, announces the installation of a new Da-Lite sound screen this week which will make it possible for the patrons of the popular movie house to enjoy, to the fullest extent, all of the magic wonders of motion pictures.

Oct. 9, 1940 LAUREL- J.A. Hobbs is the new patrolman assigned to the patrol headquarters taking the place of T.K. Woodworth, who has been transferred to the Lincoln headquarters.

Patrolman Hobbs has been stationed at Chadron, prior to his assignment here. He will be teamed with Patrolman W. Yost and will cover this territory.
