1945: Leapley, Wortmann, Patefield return from the war

Oct. 4, 1945

HARTINGTON — Scoring in every quarter, the Hartington Wildcats romped to an easy 44-0 victory over the Ponca Indians on the local field Friday afternoon. Although Coach Smith substituted freely, especially in the last half, the Hartington grid machine kept right on clicking.

The touchdown parade started in the early minutes of the game when the Wildcats recovered a Ponca fumble on the latter’s 12-yard line. Clint Nagle, Hartington center, went through the center of the line for the first score. The kick for extra point was blocked.

Ponca set up another touchdown for Hartington with a poor punt. Reeling off two first downs, Hartington took the ball from the Ponca 40-yard line to the eight, from where Nedrow circled his left end for the touchdown. The kick for extra point again failed.

Ponca made its only threat on the next kickoff by running the ball from midfield deep into Hartington territory. A fumble halted the drive, however, and on the next play Scoville raced 80-yards but the play was called back on a offside.

The Wildcats then made four first downs, carrying the ball from their own 10 to the Ponca 6-yard line. Bob Erickson plunged for the touchdown but the kick for extra point was blocked.

Midway in the second quarter Hartington recovered its own punt on the Ponca 5-yard line and Doane crashed over for a touchdown. Nedrow passed to Jones for the extra point and the half ended 25-0.
