After slow start, Cedar rolls to 24-7 win
HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic turned away a stubborn West Point-Beemer football team Sept. 26 with a 24-7 win to remain unbeaten on the season.
“We knew all week this was going to be a real challenge for us and our kids stepped up and had a great week of preparation,” said Cedar Catholic coach Chad Cattau. “Overall I felt that our kids played really hard and that we did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage. Our linemen were physical and played really hard throughout the game.” The Trojans posted a couple of scores in the first quarter then tried to put the clamps on the Cadets running back, Myles Nielsen.
“We knew we were going to face one of the best running backs in the state and overall we made him really work for the yards he got,” Cattau said. “We need to clean up some tackling but we knew he was going to make some guys miss because he is really good.”
Nielsen would finish the night with just 94 yards rushing on his 17 carries with a long run of 16 yards.
Easton Hochstein had a great first quarter, well, and a great game, he just scored a couple of touchdowns in the first 12 minutes.
He hauled in a seven-yard pass from Grady Haberer for Cedar’s first touchdown with 7:20 left in the period then exploded for a 42-yard dash just under four minutes later to stake a 14-0 lead for his team.
“We had some backs who got more reps and carries than they were used to due to injuries and they played extremely well,” said Cattau. “We have confidence in whoever we put out there to get the job done.”
The Cadets answered with a score in the second quarter and the teams went to the halftime huddle with Cedar Catholic in front, 14-7.
The defenses butted heads throughout the third frame then Jared Rutar booted a 27-yard field goal just 55 seconds into the final quarter to make it a 2-score ballgame.
Brady Hochstein put a cap on his night with a 10-yard score with 2:56 left on the clock, part of his 142 yards rushing in the game.
On defense, Quinn Hochstein had 11 total tackles, Easton and Brady Hochstein eight and nine tackles respectively.
Brady had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage and Easton had two and a sack for a loss of eight yards. Will Steffen added three tackles for a loss, Rutar had two and Sam Wiebelhaus added one.
Cedar Catholic is scheduled to go to Battle Creek Oct. 3 to take on the 2-3 Braves in a district contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p. m.
