LAUREL — Carlie Kvols is a young lady who is in her third year of starting as her mother’s and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s setter on the volleyball court.
The thing a lot of folks don’t realize, is just how good she is at what she does.
And how cool she is about it when you ask her. As I head to my 24th state tournament this year, I think I’ve figured a few things out and I know, I know kids.
Carlie is so unassuming and not looking for people to pay attention to her, that she just makes my heart sing.
I chatted with her at the football game Friday night, and that in itself was a joy, but she gave me a lesson about humility.
“I love getting to 2,000 assists because it takes two people to get every assist besides myself,” said Kvols. “You need someone to pass the ball and someone to finish. I have both.”
I would like to go back and remember every player that was involved in every assist the young lady had in her first three years as a setter, but I wouldn’t want to leave anyone off of the list.
“I always tell the girls getting someone to 2,000 assists is the ultimate ‘team’ award,” said Julie Kvols, the Lady Bear coach and Carlie’s mother. “We have a really good group of players this year. I love having six rotation players and this year we have quite a few of them and the best thing is they are good teammates, good friends, just good people.”
Officially, Tyler Recob got the winner on Carlie’s 2,000th assist, but it may as well have been Rena Rasmussen, Hattie McCorkindale, Kaida Eriksen… the list could go on endlessly.
“It truly is a team award,” Carlie said. “It’s kind of just a number, it doesn’t really matter as long as we keep winning.”
And that’s exactly what this group of Lady Bears has done all season as they improved their season mark to 14-0 with a title in the Central City Invitational over the weekend.
To watch Carlie and her teammates on the court is such a joy it is inspiring.
“We try to just stay in the now, celebrate every point and every win,” Carlie said. “We really do get along, we care about each other on and off the court.”
She added another 50 to 60 assists to her career total over the weekend, but that’s not what makes her tick, so to speak.
“Every sport is fun when you win,” she said. “As long as we keep doing that, that is all that matters.”
