1925: Law enforcement targets Cedar County Sunday dances

Sept. 24, 1925

RANDOLPH — Sunday dances in Cedar County will be stopped as contrary to law and public morals.

A crowd was gathered at the Henry Nohr place near Aten last Sunday night all ready for the fiddles to tune up, when the sheriff and county attorney appeared and postponed the jazzfest. From the Nohr place they drove to Homewood Park where a dance was in progress. Mr. Hoese, the manager, was asked to call the dance off, but as it was nearly Monday morning the dancers had almost their money’s worth when the officers came. No more Sunday dances at Homewood is the order. At the Vanderheiden farm near Laurel a Sunday dance will also be closed.

RANDOLPH — The Protestant churches in Coleridge have decided to pool their interests instead of having several weak, struggling organizations to unite in one strong society.

This attitude has led, after some months of deliberation to the organizing of a Congregational church, a denomination other than any of those in the merger.

RANDOLPH — Miracles will sometimes happen.

And that is what happened to Fred and Joe Ahrens when their truck loaded with brick and several boxes of dynamite caps was hit by a train northwest of Hartington.

The engine hit the front of the truck and knocked it to one side. They came out of it mighty lucky.

RANDOLPH - It will be remembered that last summer Mrs. John Starner lost her life in an auto accident near Hartington.

Mrs. Starner was formerly Miss Mellissa Hill and lived in Randolph with her sister, Mrs. E. E. Brown.

The husband brought suit for $15,000 damages against Julius Olson and his son Maurice as being responsible for the accident that left several small children without a mother.

Trial of the case was made at Hartington and after deliberating for over seven hours the jury returned a verdict for $2500 damage. This was one of the important cases before the district court at this term.

Sept. 24, 1925

RANDOLPH - The congregation of the Hope Lutheran church two miles south of McLean, has made an arrangement for regular preaching services, by engaging Rev. Troast of the Immanuel church at Pierce to give a part of his time to Hope church.

Rev. Troast has been with the Pierce church for about three years, and his arrangement provides for a preaching service each Sunday at the Hope church. At present Rev. Troast is on vacation in South Dakota.

Sept. 24, 1925

RANDOLPH - The Rev. H. Staver, who was recently called to the pastorate of St. John’s Lutheran church of this city, will be formally inducted into office this Sunday. The Rev. F. Krauss of Plainview will conduct the installation services, which will be in German. The new pastor would be very pleased to meet all members and friends of the congregation at this service. Make it a point to be present.

Sept. 24, 1925

RANDOLPH - Fred Thies, musician, composer and Cedar County farmer, will broadcast a program from WOAW, Omaha, on Oct. 6 or 7 during the national American Legion convention.

Mr. Thies is a member of the Legion and will visit Omaha as a Legionnaire. He has also been asked to bring his concertina and play for the thousands of people who tune in on the concerts broadcasted from WOAW.

Mr. Thies was a member of the 29th machine gun battalion of the 110th Division in training at Camp Funston.

Last year Mr. Thies made a decided success with his concertina in a program broadcasted from Omaha. The concertina is an instrument difficult to master, yet capable of wonderful music, and this young man is a skilled performer on the concertina. Last year Mr. Thies sang “Since Mother has Gone,” a beautiful song dedicated to his mother, and which he has never published. He had many requests to repeat this song.

The program he will give has not been fully decided on by Mr. Thies. Should he give a vocal number it will be “Just Thinking,” a sentimental song of his composition published recently.
