Lady Trojans drop a pair at Elgin triangular

ELGIN - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan volleyball team traveled to Elgin Sept. 16 for a triangular with Elgin Public/Pope John and Norfolk Catholic.

The Lady Knights entered the triangular without a loss and the Wolfpack had only been beaten once this season.

Cedar Catholic won the opening set with the Wolfpack 25-22 but fell 25-14 and 25-18 to drop the match.

“We came out and played very clean volleyball in the first set,” said Cedar Catholic coach Denae Buss. “I felt we got them out of system and really we were able to connect with good passes.

“The second set we struggled in serve receive. In the third set we started to come back around, but had given the momentum over and committed a lot of errors so we couldn’t stack our good things.”

Brynn Bernecker and Addison Walter paced the Lady Trojan offensive attack with eight and seven kills respectively while Calley Stewart added five winners. Bernecker also rifled three ace serves.

Autumn Kathol tipped up 15 set assists and completed a double-double after recording 10 digs while Kally Becker recorded 10 assists.

Anisten Wortmann had 11 digs and successfully passed 19 serves to be tipped up.

Reese Albers and Jocelyn Bottolfsen both had nine digs and Ava Stewart recorded three blocks at the net.

Against the Lady Knights, it was all Norfolk Catholic.

“We really struggled to get in a groove, creating our own errors,” said Buss. “We just need to keep trusting in our process and get back to work to fix our fundamentals.”

Walter and Calley Stewart each hit six winners, Bernecker added five and Wortmann and Ava Stewart had four apiece. Savannah Pick tacked on three kills.

Bernecker had three ace serves, Pick and Kathol each had two.

Kathol posted 14 assists, Becker added eight. Calley Stewart had five stuffs at the net, Walter added three and Pick had two. Bernecker and Wortmann each had seven digs.

Cedar Catholic was set to host Pierce on Sept. 23 before hosting a triangular with Wayne and O’Neill on Sept. 25.

The Lady Trojans will head to Battle Creek Sept. 30 in Mid State Conference action.
