HARTINGTON — The Lewis & Clark Natural Resources District (LCNRD) has long provided tree seedlings for purchase each spring. In 2026, LCNRD will also be providing rototilling services and seedling tree planting for landowners who wish to establish conservation tree belts and windbreaks.
Rototilling is a vital step in preparing land for tree establishment. By loosening compacted soil and incorporating organic matter, this process enhances root penetration, soil aeration, and moisture retention, key factors for healthy seedling growth. When paired with timely tree planting, these services minimize transplant shock, reduce weed competition, and promote rapid root development, resulting in improved survival rates and more vigorous growth.
This integrated approach supports successful tree establishment and meets the practical needs of landowners preparing for the planting season.
“Timing and site preparation are everything when it comes to tree planting,” said Myles Lammers, LCNRD Assistant Manager. “By aligning rototilling and planting at the optimal time, we expect to see stronger root development and better overall seedling survival.”
These services are part of LCNRD’s ongoing commitment to conservation, erosion control, and habitat enhancement throughout the region. Landowners who participated in the program are already seeing the benefits, with healthier trees and improved soil conditions.
LCNRD encourages you to plan ahead for next year’s tree planting season and reach out to LNRD for more information about tree planting design and species selection. Visit www.lcnrd.org or contact the LCNRD office at (402) 254-6758.
