HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic football team had a very successful homecoming thanks to senior Brady Hochstein and a stingy defense.
Hochstein rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns on his 11 touches on offense and along with Easton Hochstein led the Trojan defense in tackles with seven each including a couple behind the line of scrimmage.
“This was a game where we really wanted to make sure we played at our level and continued to show improvements from last week,” said Cedar coach Chad Cattau. “Overall we did a good job of that. We still have things we need to improve on so we can’t be satisfied with where we are.
“We are battling some injuries right now, but I know we will have kids step up and fill those roles. It was great getting everyone in for some snaps. I know kids always appreciate that opportunity on a Friday night.”
The Trojans sputtered to open the game.
A Jared Rutar 37-yard field goal midway through the opening period opened the scoring and the Tigers actually scored the first touchdown on a pass play to take a 6-3 lead with 4:49 left in the first frame.
A Hochstein run from seven yards away gave Cedar Catholic the lead for good with no time left in the first and after a Rutar kick, the Trojans led 10-6.
Cedar kicked into high gear in the second 12 minutes, Hochstein scored from the 20, Micah Cattau ran one in from the 17, another Brady Hochstein run from 13 yards out and an Easton Hochstein ramble from the 30 and when the smoke cleared, the Trojans were in front, 36-6.
Quarterback Grady Haberer ran one in from 26 yards out to start the continuous clock with 9:37 left in the third then Hudson Whitmire took a turn from the four to make it 49-6 with 1:37 left in the quarter.
Hudson Dendinger scored one last time for Cedar in the fourth and the final score was set. Easton Hochstein added 98 yards to the Cedar Catholic rushing total on just 8 totes of the pigskin as the Trojans ran over and around the Tigers for over 400 yards.
Defensively, the defense was stingy at best.
In fact, Tekamah-Herman ended the game with zero yards on the ground and just 77 through the air in a dominating performance by the Cedar Catholic defense.
Cattau and Hunter Kuchta had interceptions in the game; Graham Potts, Sam Wiebelhaus, Dylan Leise, Rutar and Jake Hoebelheinrich all had a quarterback sack.
“As a team, we need to improve ourselves each and every week,” said Cattau. “This week’s game with West Point-Beemer is going to be a big challenge for us so we need to prepare at a high level.”
The Cadets come to Hartington Sept. 26 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
