HARTINGTON — The shade trees and shelter-belt trees in Cedar County have been invaded by the fall webworm. This insect has been know to feed on more than 100 kinds of fruit, shade, and woodland trees. It does not attack evergreens. Many trees are now severely defoliated.

Control measures include spray foliage with Methoxychlor, diazonium, or carbaryl when the webs first appear or remove and burn branches with webs. Some benefit still could be received by a late spraying of infested trees.

BOW VALLEY — Life has been one long journey for Roman Wortmann.

He travels a long lane from the country road to get to his home south of Bow Valley, has been married a long time, and has a history of giving back to the community.

One way he does this is by giving blood. He has been one of the biggest and most consistent donors in the area.

Hartington — Tim and Dorene Leise won the ninth annual truck raffle announced at half time ceremonies during Cedar Catholic High School’s homecoming game Friday.

The raffle came about nine years ago during conversations about needed building improvements between both community and school administrators and realized they should look forward and plan for the school’s needs.

Joani Potts, Director of Development for Cedar County Catholic Schools and Parishes, said as is the case in many things that happen in this community, someone stepped forward with a big donation — offering to donate a truck to raffle off as part of a larger fund-raising effort.
