HUMPHREY — Wynot pushed one of Class D2’s top teams into overtime Friday before falling six points short.
The Blue Devils traveled to Humphrey to take on the top-ranked Archangel Defenders in a back-and-forth battle.
Wynot’s offense was led by quarterback Devin Brummer, who completed 23 of 30 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Kotner Koch had a big night, catching nine passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for two more scores.
Archangel was powered by Gavin Geilenkirchen, who carried the ball 28 times for 222 yards and scored the winning touchdown in overtime.
On defense, Wynot was led by Lane Heimes with 15 tackles and Koch with 10 tackles and two interceptions. For Archangel, Brenden Johannson recorded 10 tackles and Ethan Wieseler added seven.
Both defenses held early in the first quarter before Geilenkirchen broke free up the middle for a 39-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed, leaving Archangel ahead 6-0.
Wynot answered on the next series with a 56-yard, 10-play drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brummer to Koch. Koch added the conversion run, putting Wynot ahead 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Defenders reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter on a 2-yard plunge by Wieseler, who then connected with Tucker Czarnick for the conversion to make it 14-8. The Blue Devils responded again. A 26-yard pass to Braylon Hans set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Koch, who also caught the conversion from Brummer to give Wynot a 16-14 halftime lead. Archangel struck quickly in the third quarter when Geilenkirchen broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run. A conversion pass to Matt Brockley extended the lead to 22-16.
Wynot opened the fourth quarter with a scoring drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brummer to Koch. Nixon Heimes caught the PAT to tie the game at 22.
The Defenders answered with a 25yard run by Geilenkirchen and a 25-yard completion to Czarnick, followed by a conversion pass for a 30-22 lead.
With less than a minute to play, Wynot’s defense pressured the quarterback, forcing a desperation pass that Koch intercepted and returned 75 yards for a touchdown. Brummer hit Nixen Heimes for the conversion to tie the game 30-30.
Archangel’s final chance in regulation ended with another interception by Heimes, sending the game into overtime.
Wynot went scoreless on its overtime possession. Geilenkirchen then sealed the game for Archangel with a 5-yard touchdown run for the 36-30 victory.
