Playground project aims to bring together kids of all abilities
Cedar View Country Club was a busy place over the weekend. Sunday’s weather was near perfect for a walk on the greens, and the fairways and even in the rough for some folks. The National Weather Service is predicting more warm weather for this week, as well Kylie Maxon | Laurel Advocate

LAUREL — A group of local volunteers is working to ensure Laurel City Park is a place where all children can play together.

With help from the Laurel Area Community Foundation Fund, the volunteers are spearheading a project to install an ADA-compliant inclusive playground at the park.

Project organizers presented their vision at the Sept. 8 Laurel City Council meeting.

“The committee’s mission is to create a safe, welcoming and innovative playground where children of all abilities can play, learn and grow together,” said project volunteer Nicole Dennis. “We are dedicated to fostering inclusion, accessibility and community connection by designing a space that encourages imagination, supports physical and social development, and ensures that every child — regardless of ability, background or need — feels valued and empowered to play side by side.”

The playground will feature wheelchair-friendly surfaces and a variety of easily accessible play structures.

“These updates will provide children and adults of all abilities with opportunities to play and socialize together,” said volunteer Rachel Hansen.

Organizers said they were encouraged by the council’s verbal support.

“The City welcomes the enthusiasm and research these committee members have already brought to the table to better our community and the city park,” City Administrator Dan Kuhlman said.

The committee plans to begin fundraising soon.

“We encourage community members to watch for future announcements, as we will be sharing information about fundraisers and how residents can donate through the Laurel Area Community Foundation Fund,” Dennis said.

Volunteer Allison Curry said organizers also plan to share details about each new piece of playground equipment.

“We want our community members to get a look at the great things we are raising funds for,” Curry said.

According to Kuhlman, the park’s existing playground equipment will remain in place until the committee has raised all necessary funds and the new equipment is ready for installation.
