Offensive explosion carries ‘Cats to a big win

HARTINGTON - Hartington-Newcastle wasted little time in taking care of the Wakefield Trojans on Sept. 5 taking the game by the final score of 57-6.

In fact, when Austin Sudbeck crossed the goal line just 1-minute and 50-seconds into the ballgame, the Wildcats never looked back.

In “double” fact, less than two minutes later, the ‘Cats were standing in the end zone again when Carter Kelly grabbed a 40-yard aerial from Sudbeck and with 8:33 left in the first frame, it was already 14-0.

“We played a much better game this week,” said Hartington-Newcastle coach Rusty Fuller. “Overall, I was very pleased with our efforts.”

Jason Heimes capped off the first quarter with a 6-yard dash to paydirt and the teams went to the second quarter with the ‘Cats in front 21-0.

Heimes, who finished with 149 yards on 13 carries, scored the second of what would be three touchdowns in the game on a 35-yard scamper to open the second period.

“Jason continues to run the ball hard with his second 100-yard game,” said Fuller. He is playing like an all-state running back.”

Kelly and Sudbeck hooked up again, this time from 35 yards and the score went to 34-0.

“We got our tight ends, Carter Kelly and Mason Krause involved a lot,” the coach said. “They both had good games.” Kelly finished with 156 yards on six catches with a couple of touchdowns and Krause hauled in five catches for 89 yards and a score. The Trojans scored on a five-yard pass play just at the end of the first half, but Heimes opened the second half with a 43-yard jaunt to the end zone then Sudbeck and Krause got together from 35 yards away and the continuous clock was set in motion.

Kayne Gratzfeld, who was 5-for-6 on extra point kicks scored the final touchdown of the night on a 20-yard run and kicked the extra point to reach the 57-6 final score.

Sudbeck had an excellent game at quarterback, tossing the ball 17 times, completing a dozen for 250 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 29 yards on eight carries and scored once.

“Austin controlled the game at quarterback and threw some nice passes,” Fuller said.

Defensively, Lincoln Grutsch recorded seven tackles including three tackles behind the line of scrimmage, Brayden Lammers also had seven stops and two tackles for losses and Ty Opfer and Kelly each had six tackles.

Kyptin Collier recovered a Trojan fumble.

Hartington-Newcastle will travel to Norfolk Sept. 12 for a date with Lutheran High Northeast. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
