Trojans run wild against Wayne Blue Devils

WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic Trojan football team took a quick run down the highway to Wayne Friday night.

Once they got to Wayne, they just kept on running, using a pounding ground attack to run past the Blue Devils 55-7.

On the road for the first time this season the Trojans had little trouble in dispatching the Wayne Blue Devils Sept. 5 by a 55-7 final score. The Trojans accumulated nearly 500 yards in the game with only 11 of the 494-yard total coming through the air.

“I thought the kids had a really good week of preparation,” said Cedar Catholic coach Chad Cattau. “Wayne is always a game our kids rise up for because they are a bigger school than we are and it’s a rivalry that has gone back for years in a lot of sports.”

The first score came just 17 seconds into the game. Breiton Whitmire took off on a 78-yard ramble to the end zone and after a Jared Rutar kick, the score was 7-0.

“We were able to score on them right away and that really set the tone for us the rest of the game,” Cattau said. “I thought our offensive and defensive lines did a great job of controlling the game up front. We got an excellent push and we were able to stay on blocks a long time.”

Whitmire made the most of his touches during the game.

He got the ball just five times, but rushed for 168 yards and three of his five totes of the pigskin resulted in touchdowns.

He had scoring runs of 78, 56 and a short jaunt of just 27 yards.

“Our receivers blocked really well,” the coach said. “It helped turn 10-yard runs into longer runs. I really thought we would have an advantage with our speed and so we were able to take advantage of that throughout the game.”

After Whitmire’s 78-yard dash, Micah Cattau raced for 62 yards, Whitmire added his 56-yard sprint and Grady Haberer put the cherry on a drive with a 2-yard scoring pass to Brady Hochstein. When the dust settled on the first frame, The Trojans were in command, 28-0.

Cattau added a 7-yard touchdown before Whitmire scored his final six points in the second quarter and the teams went to the halftime huddle with Cedar Catholic in front 42-0 which started the continuous clock in the third period.

Cooper Hochstein plowed in from seven yards out for the lone touchdown in the third then Whitmire’s younger brother, Hudson took a turn and went 33 yards for the Trojans’ final score of the evening.

Cattau finished the evening with 81 yards on his five carries while scoring twice, Hunter Bensen ran for 69 yards on seven carries, Brady Hochstein had 3 carries for 26 yards and Easton Hochstein had four totes for 29 yards.

Defensively, Brady and Easton Hochstein each recorded 10 tackles with two of Brady’s tackles resulting in lost yardage for the Blue Devils.

It appears the Trojans will have a much more challenging test this week when they travel to Fremont to take on the Archbishop Bergan Knights.

“Bergan has a lot of excellent athletes and they love to get them the ball in space,” said Cattau. “We will need to tackle really well when we are one on one with kids and everyone else must pursue the ball with great angles. We’ll need to establish our running game and try to wear on them as the game progresses. I’m truly expecting a four-quarter battle.”
