Bears come up short in opener

LAUREL - The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Blue Jays came into town Aug. 29 and spoiled the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge home opening football game and the debut of new head coach Izac Reifenrath with a 21-8 win over the young Bears to open the 2025 season for both teams.

Guardian Angels managed a score in the first three quarters on a pair of one yard plunges and a 17-yard dash to the end zone in the third frame to take a 21-0 lead.

The Bears got something going and eventually Drey Puppe hit Kyle Rasmussen for a 10-yard touchdown pass late in the third to get back to within the 21-8 final score.

Neither team would score in the fourth quarter.

Puppe had a fairly successful debut under center for the Bears completing 12-of-19 aerials for 104 yards and the 10-yard touchdown toss to Rasmussen, but LCC managed just 48 yards on the ground on 23 carries.

Tyler Boysen and Rasmussen were a pair of Puppe’s busiest targets, each hauling in four passes with Boysen accumulating 38 yards and Rasmussen 22 including the score.

Defensively, Dayton Korth was a thorn in the Blue Jays’ side getting in on 13 tackles on the night including one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Tanner Thompson had nine stops and a tackle for loss, Drey Puppe had seven stops and a fumble recovery and Kolten Settje recorded seven tackles.

Ian Sohler had four tackles which included two behind the line and Rasmussen had a stop for a loss.

The Bears are set to move on to take on Pender Sept. 5 in Pender with the hopes of spoiling the Pendragon’s opening of their new stadium west of town.
