County sets up dedicated Keno fund to track lottery money

HARTINGTON — Cedar County commissioners voted Aug. 26 to create a separate Keno Fund to keep lottery proceeds in their own account and make it easier to track how the money is used.

The fund is designated No. 2850 in county records.

It will be filled only by net Keno lottery proceeds and any interest earned.

County residents voted last year to allow Keno at Backroad BBQ in South Yankton. Until recently, though, no funds had come in from Keno.

The county Clerk will reconcile Keno receipts and deposit them quarterly.

The County Board will oversee the fund, authorize spending, and ensure the money is used in line with the law.

Any expenses from the fund must be formally approved as part of the annual budget or by a separate board resolution.

The resolution took effect immediately upon its passage Aug. 26.

The goal, commissioners said, is straightforward: clearer oversight, cleaner bookkeeping, and more transparency about how Keno dollars are spent for county betterment.
