Cedar girls are off to a 2-0 start on the new season

RANDOLPH - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan volleyball team got its season cranked up with a triangular sweep over Homer and Randolph in Randolph on Aug. 28 after defeating the Lady Knights 25-21, 17-25 and 25-12 in a best-of-three sets match in the opening match of the triangular then sweeping the hosts, 25-21, 25-12 to come away with a 2-0 record on the young season.

In the win over the Lady Cardinals, Calley Stewart and Savannah Pick led a very balanced Cedar Catholic attack as both players smacked five kills to the other side of the court.

Anisten Wortmann added four while Ava Stewart and Addison Walter each had a pair of winners.

Kally Becker and Autumn Kathol each put up seven set assists.

Wortmann sparked the defense with seven digs, Kathol had six and Savannah Pick recorded five.

Our net play is the highlight of our game,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Denae Buss. “We were able to run some successful plays as well as working through out of system balls, making smart plays. We also improved from our first game just taking care of our side of the court.”

It took three sets, but the Lady Trojans responded in the final race to 25 with the 25-12 win in the set.

“We had to work through some kinks in this match,” the coach said. “We’re still looking to find our lineup with so many players that can contribute to our team. We moved through our serving and passing errors as we went along to finish out set three how we wanted.”

Walter led another balanced attack at the net with six kills. Brynn Bernecker and Calley Stewart each added three winners. Pick and Ava Stewart contributed two apiece.

Becker had a couple of ace serves and four assists, Reese Albers had five assists and Kathol had three.

Calley Stewart had five blocks at the net and Wortmann added three.

Cedar Catholic was set to take its 2-0 record back on the road to Norfolk to take on Lutheran High Northeast on Sept. 2 before heading to the Scotus Invitational on Sept. 6.

The Lady Trojans will continue on the road with a Mid-State Conference date with Crofton on Sept. 9.
