Wynot sets state record in high-scoring win over Crofton

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils opened the 2025 high school football season hosting the Crofton Warriors on Friday night. The game turned into a high scoring back and forth battle that took four overtimes to decide.

A bad snap for the extra point by the Warriors in the fourth overtime allowed the Blue Devils to escape the 78-76 win.

The game featured a big aerial attack for the Blue Devils as Devin Brummer went 26-30 for 344 yards through the air.

Crofton countered with a strong running game. ’Tyson Jackson lunged the pigskin 40 times for 339 rushing yards Crofton would receive the opening kickoff but on the second play from scrimmage they fumbled the ball away at the 36 yard line. Two plays later Devin Brummer connected with Kotner Koch for a 40 yard touchdown pass.

Kotner Koch also caught the PAT and Wynot held an early 8-0 lead.

The Blue Devils defense held on the next Warrior possession and took over on downs at the 13 yard line. Crofton got the ball back on an interception at the 40 yard line by Preston Foxhoven. On the very next play Tyson Jackson rumbled 40 yards for a Warrior touchdown. The PAT run was stuffed as the first quarter ended with the Blue Devils holding an 8-6 advantage. The second quarter saw both offensives be productive. Wynot was driving but Crofton’s Kolton Vornhagen interception of an errand Blue Devil pass at the 30 yard line stopped the drive . A couple of first down runs and the Warriors would convert the turnover on a 2 yard dive by Tyson Jackson. The PAT pass was incomplete as Crofton took a 12-8 lead. Wynot would answer in two plays. A 30 yard strike to Braylon Hans started the quick strike and a 23 yard sweep by Lane Heimes around the right side for the score gave the Blue Devils the 14-12 lead back.

Crofton would cough the ball up at their own nine yard line on their next offensive set. Brummer was sacked on the next play back to the 14 yard line but then found Braylon Hans over the middle on the very next play for a 14 yard touchdown. The PAT pass was incomplete as Wynot held the 20-12 lead The Warriors were not done as they would mount a final drive just before the end of the half. The drive was all on the ground with first down runs by Jace Panning, Tyson Jackson and Porter Bartels. Jackson would dive in from the 5 yard line to cap the drive. Preston Foxhoven bulled in for the PAT and the score was tied 20-20.

With just 2:30 left in the half the Blue Devils were not done. Lane Heimes broke a 30 yard sweep around the right side and with a horse collar call added the Blue Devils were back in the red zone. Heimes was rewarded with a three yard option pitch right for the touchdown. Nixen Heimes added the PAT as Wynot held the 28-20 lead at the half.

Scoring would slow in the third quarter by both teams. With under three minutes to play Wynot would strike from long distance. Wynot wide out Braylon Hans got behind the Warrior defense and Brummer would put it right on him in stride for a 65 yard touchdown bomb.

Wynot held a 34-20 lead going into the fourth quarter. Crofton continued to find success on the ground. Helped by a 30 yard scramble by Jace Panning and couple of first down runs by Tyson Jackson the Warriors rushing attack continued to find success.

Jackson powered in from eight yards out for the score. He would add the PAT to cut Wynot’s lead to 34-28.

Wynot went three and out and Crofton was on the march again. The Warriors went 42 yards in 10 plays with the drive capped by a Jace Panning one yard touchdown dive. Jackson added the PAT and Crofton had regained the 36-34 lead.

Wynot would take the lead back in two plays. First a 25 yarder up the right side line to Kotner Koch and then a 14 yard dart up the middle seam to Nixen Heimes for the touchdown. Devin Brummer ran in the PAT and the Blue Devils retook the 42-36 lead.

A couple of shanked kickoffs gave the Warriors a short field on their next possession. They would capitalize with a 44 yard touchdown run by Tyson Jackson. Panning added the PAT as the seesaw battle continued with Crofton back in the lead 44-42.

Catches by Kotner Koch and Nixen Heimes moved the ball quickly downfield. Lane Heimes scampered in from 14 yards away for the score. Heimes also ran in the PAT to give Wynot the 50-44 lead.

The Warriors hopes would ride on the back of their go to running back Tyson Jackson. He would carry the ball 6 straight times on Crofton’s final drive. Jackson sweep the right side for 21 yards for the touchdown. Wynot stopped the PAT run. An interception of the Blue Devils final pass kept the game tied at the end of regulation at 50-50.

In the first overtime, Crofton’s Tyson Jackson had a 10-yard touchdown, but the extra point attempt failed making the score 56-50 Wynot responded with a five-yard pass from Brummer to Kotner Koch but the PAT attempt failed, knotting the score at 56-56 In the second overtime, a 16-yard pass from Brummer to Braylon Hans made it 62-56, but the extra point attempt was thwarted.

Crofton responded in the second overtime with a five-yard touchdown run by Preston Foxhoven, but the PAT again failed, making it 62-62.

In the third overtime, a one-yard dive by Preston Foxhoven and a twopoint conversion pass to Trevor Allen, gave the Warriors a 70-62 lead.

In the third overtime an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kotner Koch, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Braylon Hans knotted the score at 70-70.

In the fourth overtime, Lane Heimes had a four-yard touchdown run and the extra point pass to Killian Steinhaus was good, making it 78-70 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Crofton responded with a 10-yard touchdown run by Porter Bartels, but a bad snap on the PAT attempt gave Wynot the win, 78-76.
