Randolph’s Orpheum Theatre announces line up

Aug. 22, 1935

RANDOLPH — The Orpheum Theatre has released its film schedule for the first week of August, offering area moviegoers a mix of western action, musical romance and lighthearted comedy.

On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2-3, audiences can see West of the Pecos, a Zane Grey western starring Richard Dix and Martha Sleeper. The feature will be paired with a comedy short. Showtimes are set for 8 p.m. Friday and two showings on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Admission prices are 10 and 25 cents.

The theater’s Sunday and Monday, Aug. 3-4, billing features Naughty Marietta, a musical starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Promoted as “the greatest singing picture ever made,” the film includes the capture of the Casquette girls by pirates, their rescue by a gallant soldier band, and the romance of a princess and soldier. The film also boasts several well-known songs, including I’m Falling in Love With Someone and Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life, along with the full Victor Herbert score. The comedy Windy Will also be shown. a 7:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Monday.

Closing out the week on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 7-8, the Orpheum will present Romance in Manhattan, starring Frances Lederer and Ginger Rogers. A comedy short will accompany the feature. Screenings are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 p.m. Thursday.

The Orpheum’s schedule reflects the wide appeal of Hollywood in the mid-1930s, offering Randolph residents opportunities for both adventure and musical escape during the summer.

RANDOLPH — The clever and life-like six horse team made of aluminum, harnessed and hitched to a plow, displayed in the A.J. Abts harness shop will be loaned by Mr. Abts for the Cedar County exhibit at the State Fair. The outfit was made by M.H. Abts.

RANDOLPH — Harvesting of Hemp, Cedar County’s new crop, will begin later this week.

RANDOLPH - Dist. Commander L. T. Peebles went to Beatrice Sunday as delegate from the local Legion Post to the state Legion convention. Dr. Peebles will have the pleasure and the satisfaction of reporting to the convention the Dee Wilson Post of Randolph has not only reached but has exceeded its membership quota of 50 for 1936. The report shows a paid membership of 56. This marks the sixth consecutive year that this post has equalled or excelled its membership quota — a state record.

Aug. 29, 1935

RANDOLPH - Nearly a year ago a highway accident occurred east of Randolph between a truck and a passenger car. Now Richard Axtell, farmer, J. Chaulklin of Wausa, driver of the truck, has filed a $10,000 damage suit against Axtell, alleging that Richard Axtell was driving in a negligent manner. Mr. and Mrs. Axtell were given medical attention in Randolph after the accident of last October 23, and were here for a few days.

Aug. 29, 1935

RANDOLPH - Elmer, son of John Swanson, farmer east of Belden was home Sunday afternoon with his mother attending some horses.

Elmer suffered severe bruises when he was kicked by a colt. It is not thought that the injuries will kick him out, as far as was known today was concerned.
