T he best leaders don’t need to be out in front all of the time, mugging for camera time or soundbites.
The best leaders hang back and simply lead by example.
That’s exactly what University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold did last week.
Gold’s contract called for him to receive a $159,000 performance bonus as approved by the Board of Regents at their Aug. 14 meeting.
With the University facing a huge budget crunch, Gold asked the funds instead be used to support programs across the university’s campuses.
This was not a grand gesture made for headlines. It was a thoughtful decision, grounded in his understanding of the financial challenges ahead and in his long-standing belief that students should always come first.
Board of Regents members praised his action, calling it a clear demonstration of Gold’s awareness of the challenges facing the institution. They are right. In declining the extra pay, Gold showed that leadership is not about personal gain but about service.
The funds will now flow into programs at all four university campuses, plus the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture — a meaningful boost at a time when every dollar matters.
From Lincoln to Kearney to Omaha to Curtis, and at the Medical Center, students and faculty will benefit directly from his decision.
Gold, who became the ninth president of the University of Nebraska System just last year, has already made his mark by drafting a strategic plan, developing performance metrics, and pushing forward initiatives to strengthen student, faculty and staff success. Turning down his bonus is a continuation of that same philosophy — students at the center, always. We commend Dr. Gold for his generosity, his foresight, and above all his compassion. At a time when higher education faces tough questions and financial strain, it is reassuring to know the University of Nebraska is led by someone who understands the best investment of all is in people.
That is the kind of leadership Nebraska needs — steady, selfless and focused on building a stronger future.
