LAUREL — The Laurel United Methodist Church will celebrate its centennial this weekend.

LAUREL — After a year and a half of planning the Laurel-Concord School system has a new organization devoted to the “improvement, aid and promotion of the education programs, activities and athletic programs” at the school.
Last month the board of directors of the newly formed Laurel-Concord Educational Foundation, Inc., adopted the group’s by-laws and applied for its federal tax exempt status, thereby finalizing the organization’s formation.

LAUREL —All four of Cedar County’s Class C2 schools will compete in the same football district this year.
That means Hartington, Cedar Catholic, Laurel-Concord and Randolph will all compete for the District 3 title.

LAUREL — Patriotism flowed through the streets here last week as area residents gave the 189th Army National Guard unit a heartwarming sendoff. Several area residents, members of the 189th Unit of the Nebraska National Guard said goodbye to family and friends during ceremonies Sunday in Wayne.
The unit is heading for training at Ft. Riley, Kan., followed by an 18-month tour of duty in Iraq.

LAUREL — When Laurel-Concord School started last week, a familiar driver was picking up children on the north school bus route. Kenny Stark, who began his 26th year as a bus driver, said he now has several students on his bus whose parents rode his bus when they were young. This year’s L-C bus drivers are Myron Peterson, Kim Nelson, Lori Hansen, Kenny Stark and Harold White.

LAUREL — For their final meeting, the Summer Reading Program participants Frances Heiman, Erika Brandow, Julia Casey, Alex Moyer, Dalyce Sherman, Elizabeth Ebemier, Daniel Ebmeier, Bailey Holloway, Abby Holloway, Adam Haahr, Aaron Haahr, Sydney Chapman, Connor Cross, Eric Surber, Madysn Holloway, Brooke Young, Parker Young, Alexander Heiman, Anthony Heiman and Tyrece Ratzlass enjoyed a pool party at the Laurel pool on Friday despite the cool weather.

LAUREL — An Alternative School program was discussed and approved for the 2005-06 school year during a special Laurel-Concord School Board meeting Monday.
“This new program will allow ‘at risk’ students an opportunity to be taught in a way that will better meet their needs, “Superintendent Dan Hoesing said.

LAUREL — A part of Laurel history went up in flames Saturday when the building that housed the feed mill at Laurel Feed and Grain was leveled, in a controlled burn, under the direction of State Fire Marshall, Sanford Goshorn.
