CROFTON — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans fell to defending state champion Crofton 51-42 in opening-season girls’ basketball action Thursday.
The early season rust showed in this contest, as the Lady Warriors forced Cedar into 24 turnovers in the contest.
Cedar’s only three-year sarter, Kala Sudbeck paced the Lady Trojan offense with a game-high 18 points.
Defense dominated early in Thursday’s opener, as the Lady Warriors were only able to manage an 8-7 lead over Cedar after the first frame. Both offenses picked it up in the second quarter as Crofton outscored Cedar 16-13 to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room. Coach Terry Kathol slowed the pace in the second half, a move that helped Cedar stay close, as the Warriors took an 11-10 scoring advantage.The Lady Warriors closed out the game with a 16-12 scoring run to earn the win.
Crofton’s offense was led by Caitlyn Jones, who dropped in 17 points. She was also a force on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds.
The Warriors’ Molly Van Heek also had a stellar night, She just missed a double-double, hitting for nine points and pulling down nine boards.
