Council may consider paving more streets

HARTINGTON — The One and Six Year Street Plan was reviewed in depth by the members of the Hartington City Council at their meeting Monday.
A public hearing will be held on Feb. 11. A street plan for the city will be adopted following the hearing.
One year ago the Council moved several of the streets into the one-year section of the plan.
“We did it with the thought,  if Duane Arens would have his subdivision ready, all of us would save money by having our street work done at the same time as the streets in the subdivision,” said Mayor Bill Yates. “It is not feasible to pave just a few blocks at a time.”
According to Yates, most of the streets have been included in the Street Plan for many years, although they have yet to be paved.
“I think we need to pave the rest of our streets. They have been on the plan long enough,” Yates said. “It is time.”
Councilman Ed Bottolfsen suggested first looking into the infra-structure of  the streets before making any decisions.
“We need to consider the condition and the possible work that would need to be done on the water and sewer lines; that would be a city cost,” said Bottolfsen.
The initial cost of paving the streets would be paid by a city bond. The land owners adjacent to the streets would then make assessment payments at the County Treasurer’s Office – that money is then sent to the city and is used to make the bond payments.
According to Yates, there are approximately seven blocks, plus a 100 foot section that are currently included in the one-year portion of the Street Plan.
