Relay for Life slated for this weekend
LAUREL — The seventh annual Cedar County Relay For Life is set to kick off Saturday at 7 p.m. at Haskell Field in Laurel.
The theme for this year’s event is Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.
Organizers have planned events that will raise funds for the American Cancer Society, and co-chair, Lynette Krie, invites everyone to come and be part of the festivities.
A meal will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. for Cancer survivors, and the public is invited to come and eat for a nominal fee.
In the opening ceremony, the Laurel Veterans will present the flags and Rev. Murry Johnston will sing the National Anthem. Rev. William Engebretsen will give the invocation.
The survivors’ lap is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with the caregivers’ lap to follow.
Then 17 teams will begin walking through the night with the final lap scheduled for 7 Saturday morning.
Activities will take place throughout the night, many of which the public in invited to participate.
There will be kids’ games, an American Idol contest featuring 30 team members vying for the first place, a pie eating contest, a musical chairs scavenger hunt, and the crowning of “Miss Relay” who will be a male member of one of the teams.
There will be a live auction of gift baskets at 8:15 and the lighting of the luminaries and video program at 10 p.m.
The Nebraska Hero of Hope will be present and give a presentation during the evening.
Keeping with the theme, a Fight Back Ceremony will be held at 11:30 p.m.
Teams will be sponsoring activities throughout the night with an omelet feed planned for 5:30 a.m.
The event will conclude with an ecumenical church service at 6 a.m. featuring Pastor Andreas Stein of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, followed by the final lap at 7 a.m.
