The impending snow storm slated for late Friday and Saturday has forced area schools to change the schedules for their conference tournament games.

The Lewis and Clark girls Conference Basketball game scheduled for Friday, Feb. 2 has a location and time change. The Wynot girls basketball game will be played against  Osmond at 5 pm Friday at Wausa High School.

The MidStates Conference semifinal boys basketball game between Cedar  Catholic and Pierce High School has also been moved up to 5 p.m. Friday. That game will be played in Wayne.

PLAINVIEW —  Cedar Catholic closed out the regular season Saturday by picking up three medals at the always-tough Plainview Invitational.
Senior Andrew Lorenz earned a third-place medal, while senior Tyler Loberg and freshman Sam Wortmann picked up fifth-place medals.
The Cedar wrestlers finished  11th in the 18-team event. Syracuse and Arlington took home the top two spots in the tourney with Howells finishing third.

Coach John Freeman said Sam Wortmann is really wrestling well in the 113-pound weight class.
“He wrestled really well, going  2-2 in an eight-man bracket and getting fifth,” Freeman said.
Both of his losses were close contests down to the wire, as   he only lost by four points in his first match against Syracuse’s Neil Damme, and he lost by two points in his third match against Chase Osborne of Battle Creek. Both of his wins came by pin.
Austin Kaddatz shows improvement every week, despite losing two at Plainview, Freeman said.
Zech Thoene had a 16-0 technical fall over Ponca’s Jose Markworth. In his next match, Thoene lost to eventual tourney champion Cody Erickson of Arlington. He earned a pin over Norfolk Catholic’s Matt Bartek in his next match. His day ended after losing by pin to Austin McDonald of Wayne.  Thoene had an 8-2 lead early, but after one wrong move he ended up on his back for the pin.
Austin Koch also competed, but was not able to pull out a win. Coach Freeman said he had, “a good second match against a junior.  I was very proud of him after not being able to wrestle in the last two tournaments he wrestled very well.”
Loberg medaled despite competing in a very tough bracket, which featured three state-rated wrestlers. Only one of the wrestlers in the bracket has a losing record on the season.
Loberg dropped his first match to 23-9 Avery Stevenson of Syracuse, but Freeman said he was, “wrestling very well until he got stuck by a good move.”
Loberg then put together a pair of wins, pinning both Calvin Casey of Laurel and Brody Steffen of Crofton to advance. He lost his next contest to Newman-Grove-Lindsay’s Derick Wallin. Wallin has a 26-3 record and is the sixth-rated wrestler in the state. Loberg’s win ties him for first on the all-time school win list with Chad Koch.
Andrew Lorenz started the day with a :45 pin over Andrew Wookman of Lutheran High NE, who entered the contest with a 24-7 mark.
He faced another tough foe in his next match in Syracuse’s 32-2 Ethan Manley. Manley, rated as the top wrestler in Class B, earned the pin late in the first period to send Lorenz to the wrestlebacks. Lorenz then pinned West Holt’s Caleb Akins and Crofton’s Travis Allvin to earn the third-place medal.
“These two guys (Lorenz and Loberg) are setting and breaking all kinds of all-time records and season records all over the place,” Coach Freeman said. “But they better set those records high. There are some good kids behind them that will be working to break them.”

HARTINGTON – Cedar Catholic suffered its second loss of the season during action at Ponca early last week, but bounced back to pick up a Friday night win over Wagner, S.D.
“Overall I think our kids responded well after a poor showing in Ponca,” Cedar Catholic Coach Matt Steffen said.
Wagner senior Jack Robinson poured in all of the Red Raiders’ early points as the South Dakota visitors built a 9-2 lead before Cedar caught fire with James Kaiser’s trey and his 12-foot jumper to cut the deficit to 9-7

Logan Feilmeier and Kaiser hit back to back shots from downtown to cut the Cedar deficit to one point, 14-13, with 2:40 left in the opening frame.
The two squads traded baskets for the remainder of the frame with Wagner putting together an 8-5 run to end the opening quarter up 22-18.
The Trojans tightened their defense and changed things up in the second frame to hold the Red Raiders to just seven second-quarter points to take a 35-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
“We came out and played extremely hard and played smarter defense against Wagner,”   Coach Steffen said. “The kids adjusted well on defense after the first quarter and made it much more difficult for them to score.  Zach Steffen had a nice defensive effort against (Noah) St. Pierre, just to keep up with him and make it difficult for him to drive into the lane.”
Logan Weinandt hit a pair of close-in shots and Trevor Hamilton added one from the paint to help Cedar take a 10-point lead early in the third quarter. Logan Feilmeier then knifed through the defense for a lay-in to give Cedar a 46-35 lead with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
Wagner refused to give up, though and kept coming back in the final frame, whittling the deficit to just four points before the Trojans sealed the win when James Kaiser hit 3-4 foul shots at the end.
The Cedar offense was paced by Logan Weinandt and James Kaiser.
Weinandt put in a career-best effort under the basket to garner 21 points.
Kaiser also posted a career best, coming off the bench to drop in 18 points. Logan Feilmeier also hit double figures for Cedar, dropping in 10 points.
“James Kaiser really helped our offense with 15 first-half points,” Coach Steffen said.

Two of the top teams in Class C2 collided when Cedar and Ponca squared off for  Tuesday’s slugfest.
The Indians erased a two-point third quarter deficit to earn the 57-49 win in a game that was much closer than the score indicats.
“Ponca is a tough place to go into and get a win, that being said I don’t think we played very well offensively or defensively,” Coach Steffen said. “It just seemed like every time we needed a stop, we gave up an easy basket.  We weren’t prepared well enough to give the effort we needed to win that game, and I told the kids that was my fault and it wouldn’t happen again.”
Ponca opened the contest with a 12-8 run, Cedar took control in the seocnd frame, though to outscore the Indians 18-11 and take a 26-23 lead into the locker room.
Ponca earned the 15-14 scoring advantage in the third quarter. The Indians then took the lead early in the fourth and hit their foul shots to seal the win.
Neither team was able to get much offense from the perimeter, as Cedar was 0-6 from long distance and the Indians were just 1-8. Ponca was deadly from the foul line, though, connecting on 12-14 charity shots.

Cedar and Ponca traded points evenly in the first frame, which ended with the Lady Trojans ahead 10-9.
Cedar then outscored the Lady Indians 12-9 to take a  five-point lead into the locker room.
Defense dominated in the third period as Cedar took an 8-7 scoring advantage
It was a rough contest and it showed as the Lady Trojans ended up turning the ball over 35 times.
“We haven’t played a team this physical for awhile. It caught us off guard and we really never recovered,” Coach Jason Folkers said. “We did win, but offensively, we were out of sync, we weren’t moving, we weren’t cutting, and we didn’t pass the ball very well.”
Despite the turnovers.
One thing we did, and we do every night is play as hard as we can.  These girls are relentless, no matter what they have to battle against and I am very proud to be their coach.”
Cedar was aided to the win by a dominating performace on the boards, pulling down 64 rebounds to just 31 for Ponca. Ponca was also hurt by a dismal performance at the line, connecting on just 2-16 foul shots.

Bryan Purviance was the one-man show for Lynch as he took scoring honors for the game with 21 points.
Wynot was led by Chris Schmidt with 12 points and five rebounds. Jackson Sudbeck drained four three-pointers for his 12 points and Nathan Wieseler had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Devils on offense. Koby Sudbeck led all rebounding with eight caroms.
Chris Schmidt got Wynot off to a fast start as he hit a pair of three pointers on his way to a seven-point first quarter. Koby Sudbeck controlled the offensive glass and helped with six points as the Blue Devils roared to a 25-6 lead after one quarter.
Lynch got four points from Purviance in the second quarter but Wynot’s offense was rolling. Five points by Brady Stratman and balanced scoring produced a 38-10 halftime lead for the Devils.
Filip Burbach came in off the bench in the third quarter and drained a pair of three-point bombs for Wynot.  Nathan Wieseler scored a couple of baskets in close and Wynot continued to build their lead to 53-17.
Bryan Purviance would explode for 10 points for Lynch in the fourth quarter but his team was facing an insurmountable lead. Wynot got a pair of threes from Jackson and a pair of regular field goals by John DeBlauw as they finished off the Eagles 77-27.

“We  shot very poorly in the first half, but played better in the second and cut the lead to four points.  Wakefield hit some clutch freethrows at the end,” said Hartington coach Josh Morten.
Hartington was led by Micheala Dendinger with five points and Megan Wolfe with four points. Wakefield got a big 17 point-performance from Lauren Lehmkuhl, who led all scorers by a wide margin.
Hartington did not hit a fieldgoal in the opening frame. Wakefield got three pointers from Laren Lehmkuhl and Shelby Lierman as they took the 8-0 first-quarter lead.
Micheala Dendinder hit a trey for the Lady Wildcats in the second quarter but Wakefield counter with a pair of treys by Lauren Lehmkuhl and pushed out to a 15-4 halftime lead.
Hartington played better after the half. Myranda Fischer drained a three pointer to open the third quarter and field goals  by Megan Wolfe and Micheala Dendinger helped cut the Trojan lead to 18-11.
Field goals by Shelby Hochstein, Megan Wolfe and Taylor Dybdal would cut Wakefield’s lead to four points midway through the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans would hit only 6-13 free throws down the stretch but it was good enough to hold off Hartington and advance with the 26-17 win.

The Lady Wildcats had a hot and cold week of basketball.
On Tuesday they would hang tough in the first half but went flat offensively in the second and fell to the Plainview Pirates by a score of 48-25. Then on Thursday they would bounce back to shoot the ball well and thumped the Winside Wildcats by a big score of 49-10.
In Tuesday’s game against Plainview the Lady Wildcats were lead by Myranda Fischer with 9 points and Samantha Huss with 8 points. The Lady Pirates got 13 points from Cherise Friedrich and 11 points from Brittany White.
Plainview got four points in the first quarter from Brittany White as both teams struggled offensively early. The Lady Pirates took an 8-4 first period advantage.
Myranda Fischer started to hit from long range for the Lady Wildcats in the second quarter as she dropped in a trio of buckets from behind the arc as Hartington  would take a 18-17 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Wildcats would go in the deep freeze in the second half as Plainview held them to just two fieldgoals after the half. Meanwhile Plainview got four points from D.J. Mart and a three pointer by Brittany White to pull away to a 34-22 third quarter lead.
In the fourth the Wildcats shooting woes continued and Plainview got 7 points from Katelyn Johnston and a trey by Cherise Friedrich as they ran away for the 48-25 win.

On Thursday, Hartington had an easy time with the Winside Wildcats as they held them to just three fieldgoals and earned a big 49-10 conference win.
“Good defensive effort throughout and Myranda and Taylor had solid games for us,” said  Hartington coach Josh Morten.
Hartington was led by Myranda Fischer with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists. Taylor Dybdal also had a solid night with 11 points, six boards and three steals.
Winside got five points each from Nazya Thies and Shelby Linemann to account for all their scoring.
Neither team set the nets on fire in the opening quarter but Hartington got a pair of fieldgoals from Myranda Fischer and took an early 7-3 lead.
In the second quarter Winside was held scoreless and Hartington got a trey and 7 more points from Fischer and Taylor Dybdal worked the offensive glass for a pair of fieldgoals and the Purple Cats had built a 22-3 halftime lead.
Shelby Linemann hit a three for Winside to open the second quarter but offense was hard to find for the Red Cats.
Myranda Fischer drained a pair of three pointers and Samantha and Kristina Huss each contributed fieldgoals and Hartington widened the margin to 36-6.
Reserves mopped up in the final quarter.; Shelby Hochstein hit a trey and Greer Olsen and Bailey Jones had fieldgoals as  Hartington earned the lopsided 49-10 win.

WYNOT — Mismatches happen when the number-two seed and the number 15-seed get together.
That was exactly the case here Saturday when number-two seed Wynot took on the 15th seed Wausa Lady Vikings in first round action of the Lewis and Clark Conference tournament.
The Lady Devils rolled over the Lady Vikes  74-11.
The Lady Vikings had trouble with the Blue Devils’ relentless pressure defense and when they did break it they shot poorly hitting on only 5 of 39 shots.

Wynot was led on the offense by Shelby Wieseler who hit a trio of three pointers on her way to 15 points. Kattie Savoy also finished with three treys and 12 points and Maggie Schulte had 12 points and eight rebounds for the the Lady Blue Devils.
Wausa was led by Michelle Haselhorst with four points.
Wynot got off to a fast start behind eight points by Maggie Schulte and treys by Erica Burbach and Kattie Savoy to stake themselves to a big 27-1 opening-quarter lead.
Wynot continued to roll up big numbers in the second quarter.
A three-pointer and five points by Shelby Wieseler and a three from the left wing by Shelby Hochstein fueled an 18-2 run to lead 45-3 at the half.
Shelby Wieseler rained in two more bombs from behind the arc and Kattie Savoy hit her second trey of the game in the third quarter and Wynot continued to dominate the game and built their lead to 63-5 at the end of three periods.
In the fourth quarter Wausa got fieldgoals from Michelle Haselhorst, Morgan Kumm and Breana Gallup.

Wynot countered with four more points by Maggie Schulte, a Kattie Savoy trey and fieldgoals by Heidi Klug and Megan Klug as they finished off the game on a 11-6 run to make the final 74-11.

The Wynot Lady Blue Devils continue to rack up the wins as the travelled to Lynch on icy roads on Tuesday night and dominated for four quarters and rolled to their 16th win of the season with a big 87-36 pasting of the Lady Eagles. Wynot would rain in 11 three pointers  and go 20 of 25 from the free throw line. The Lady Blue Devils would outrebound the Lady Eagles 34-18 as they contolled both the offensive and defensive glass for most of the night.
Wynot placed four players in double figures lead by Maggie Schulte with 15 points. Shelby Wieseler hit 4 three pointers for her 12 points and Haley Gowery connected twice from behind the arc and ended with a dozen points as well. Erica Burbach was able to contribute a pair of three pointers and reached double figures as well with her 10 point effort.
The Lady Eagles got a steady 14 points from McKenna Rossmeier to lead Lynch.
Maggie Schulte led the charge out of the gate for the Blue Devils with a quick nine points. Haley Gowery, Erica Burbach and Kattie Savoy all hit three pointers to help give Wynot a 26-7 first-quarter lead.
Lynch got a pair of fieldgoals each from McKenna Rossmeier and Shelbie Heiser in the second quarter but Wynot kept raining in threes and the Lady Eagles could gain no ground. A trio of three pointers by Shelby Wieseler hurt and a trey and five points by Erica Burbach also did some more damage as Wynot expanded their lead to 49-19 at the half.
Rossmeier got all eight of Lynch’s third quarter points as Wynot countered with six points from Bailey Kuchta and threes by Ashley Heine and Shelby Wieseler as they went on a 20-8 run to put the Lady Eagles in a very deep hole at 69-27.
Reserves saw a lot of action in the final quarter and Zoey Heimes drained a three pointer while Kelsie contributed a conventional thre points and the Lady Devils hit 5-8 freethrows down the stretch making the final a lopsided 87-36 margin.

HARTINGTON — The Hartingon Wildcats split a pair of ball games this week. On Tuesday Hartington battled back from an early deficit to rally late in the game and earn a  41-39 win over the Plainview Pirates. Then on Thursday the Wildcats would let one slip away against the Winside Wildcats and have their season record drop to 5-9 with a 43-34 loss.

On Tuesday in Hartington the Wildcats hosted the Pirates in non-conference action. The Wildcats trailed 26-15 at the half only to rally in the second half to earn the hard-fought win over the Plainview Pirates.
“The boys fought hard the entire game, put together a fourth-quarter rally and came away with a well earned win,” said Hartington coach Nick Haselhorst.
The Hartington offense featured a very balanced attack led by Nick Miller with nine points and followed by Eric Derickson with seven points and Adam Hochstein and Derek Jueden with six points each.
Plainview was paced by Dalton Hitz with 14 points and Sam Meuret who hit three treys on his way to and 11 point output.
The Pirates would take the early lead when Sam Meuret hit a trio of three pointers in the first quarter to lead his team to a 15-7 lead. Hartington was led by five points from Nick Miller.
Derek Jueden would hit a trey for Hartington to open the second quarter but Plainview got all nine of their points from the freethrow line in the period and increased their lead to 24-15 at the half.
In the third quarter Ross Hegge connected for four points and Derek Jueden hit his second trey of the night as Hartington rallied and went on a 13-10 run to cut the deficit to 28-24.
Dalton Hitz connected for a pair of fieldgoals for Plaineview in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats defense stiffened and Adam Hochstein came to life with a trio of baskets in close and Eric Derickson connected for five points as the Wildcats completed the comeback.

Despite shooting poorly in the first and fourth quarters the Purple Cats had opportunities, but came up short Thursday against Winside. The Red Cats hit their free throws down the stretch and HPS just didn’t get to the line enough to keep up as Winside took a 43-34 win.
Hartingon was led by Adam Hochstein with eight points and Derek Jueden with seven points. Winside got double figures from Garrett Watters with 12 and and Blain Meyer with 10 points.
“We played pretty good defense in this one but couldn’t get our perimeter shots to fall against their zone. This was a tough loss as I think we feel we had some chances for a different outcome,” said Hartington coach Nick.Haselhorst. Winside’s Blaine Meyer got his team off to a fast start with a quick 7 points and Garrett Watters dropped in a pair of field goals as the Red Cats roared to an early 13-5 lead.
Hartington would rally in the second quarter and go on a 13-4 run of their own. Balanced scoring and 4 points from Adam Hochstein and a Nick Miller three pointer fueled the rally. Hartington held a slim 18-17 hafltime advantage.
The two teams traded leads in the third quarter. Winside got four points from Tanner Woslager and a trey by Tyler Jaeger. Hartington depended on long range shooting. Nick Miller, Ross Hegge and Derek Jueden all drained threes as each side scored 14 points and Hartington clung to the slim 32-31 lead.
Hartington would pick a bad time to go cold from the field late in the fourth quarter and when the Cats decided to send them to the line they connected on enough free throws to seal the win by a final of 43-34.

HARTINGTON — Holy Trinity sixth grader Alissa Miller, daughter of Chris and Rhonda Miller, gets set to put up a shot during halftime of last week’s Cedar Catholic basketball game with Creighton. Only a few weeks ago area kids were shooting hoops outside as temperatures broke records by hitting the 60s and 70s. Traditional January weather has returned, however, with lows the last several days hovering near zero, and snow and high winds Sunday into Monday. The National Weather Service is predicting warmer weather this week with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s by Wednesday.

HARTINGTON —  Cedar Catholic’s bid for perfection ended at the hands of conference nemisis Wayne Friday.
Cedar bounced back Saturday to hand another MidStates Conference foe, West Point Guardian Angels, a big 57-45 setback.
Earlier in the week Cedar easily dismantled once-beaten Creighton 71-57.
The Trojans now stand at 11-1 on the year.

Despite the 11-point loss, Friday’s game was much closer than the final score indicated.
“It was a well played game by both teams, but in the end they just made more shots than we did,” Cedar Coach Matt Steffen said.
The game started out as a back and forth affair. The two teams traded baskets evenly in the first frame, ending the quarter knotted at 10-10.
Wayne earned some breathing room with a 13-10 second-quarter run, but the Trojans erased the first-half deficit with a 6-0 run to open the third quarter. Trevor Hamilton’s inside shot with 6:24 left in the frame put the Trojans up 24-23.
A trio of free throws put Wayne back on top, 26-24. Hamilton again tied the game up, this time with a pair of free throws.
Logan Weinandt then put the Trojans back on top, 29-26, with an inside jumper and a foul shot.
Hamilton’s layup with 4:15 left in the quarter put the Trojans up by five points.
Then Zach Steffen extended the lead by swishing one in from downtown, but Wayne came back strong, closing out the frame with a quick 8-0 run to take a 38-34 lead into the final frame.
“Wayne did a nice job of isolating Brady Soden in the second half and we didn’t do a good enough job of helping him,” Steffen said.
Wayne extended its lead in the fourth quarter by hitting its freethrows down the stretch. Cedar had several chances to get back into the game, but missed several easy shots.
“Wayne is 13-2 for a reason, they have a lot of different players that can hurt you in different ways on offense.”
Steffen said the Trojans always kept their heads up and put together a good effort against a very good team.
“Our kids did a nice job of fighting back in the game on several occasions, but it just wasn’t our night in the end,” he said.  “We told the kids we were just a little off tonight and when you play a team like Wayne, you just can’t have an off night.”
Senior Trevor Hamilton posted a career night for Cedar, leading the team with 12 points. Ben Soden led the Blue Devils with a game-high 18 points.

Despite 4-13 first-quarter shooting Saturday, Cedar was still able to earn a 15-10 early lead against West Point Guardian Angels.
A pair of Zach Steffen foul shots and an off balance Trevor Hamilton jumper gave Cedar the early 4-2 lead. Steffen nailed a shot from behind the arc with 4:02 left in the opening frame to give Cedar a 7-2 advantage.
The Blue Jays then hit a foul shot which was quickly followed up by a Kyle Klug jumper to give Cedar a 9-3 advantage.
The Jays were able to close out the opening frame with a 7-6 run to cut Cedar’s lead to five. They kept their momentum in the second frame, outscoring Cedar 15-12 to cut Cedar’s halftime lead to two points, 27-25.
“We started a little slow and let GACC gain some confidence in the second quarter,” Coach Steffen said.  “I felt we came out in the third quarter, set the tempo and they never really threatened us after that.”
The Trojans took over in the third quarter with a big 20-10 third-quarter run.
The run started quickly as Kyle Klug drove the lane for two. On the Trojans’ next possession Klug dished the ball to Hamilton for an inside jumper. Logan Weinandt then brought the crowd to its feet with a dunk to give Cedar a 33-25 lead.

A big second-quarter run  lifted Cedar to a 77-53 win over Creighton here Tuesday.
The Trojans shot 56 percent from the field, knocking down 30-of-54 shots to hand the Bulldogs their second straight loss.
Cedar broke the game open in the second frame with an 11-2 run to put the Trojans in control for good.
Logan Feilmeier got things started when he grabbed a rebound and stuffeed it back in. Logan Weinandt then put the Trojans up 25-15 with 3:52 left in the quarter with a put-back of his own.
Ryan Mitteis cut the lead to 25-19 with a pair of free throws, followed by a steal and layup, but the Bulldogs couldn’t get any closer.

A Kyle Klug layup helped Cedar stretch the lead to 13 points at 37-24 with 25 seconds left in the half before Kory Wagner brought the deficit back to 10 points by hitting from downtown just before the break.
Cedar put the clamps on the Creighton offense in the second half.
The Trojans built their lead to 59-41 by the end of the third quarter even with Logan Feilmeier — who scored 13 points in the first half — spending most of the quarter on the bench in foul trouble.
Cedar was led by four double-figure scorers.
Kyle Klug led the way with 16 points, Zach Steffen added 14 and Feilmeier finished with 13 points.  Logan Weinandt chipped in with 12 points in the paint.
Mitteis could not be held down, though, as he was able to connect for a game-high 24 points. Wagner finished with nine points, and Cody Fitch added 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Creighton, which opened the season with 11 consecutive wins, has now lost two games in a row and has fallen out of the state ratings.
