Lady Bears claim another title; remain unbeaten

CENTRAL CITY - The Laurel-Concord- Coleridge Lady Bear volleyball team just keeps rolling along.

LCC improved to 14-0 on the season with four big wins over the past week including a team title in the Central City Invitational on Sept. 20.

As a cherry on top of a milk shake, junior setter, Carlie Kvols tipped up her 2,000th career set assist in a match with Plainview on Sept. 18 which was played in front of the home fans.

“There is great volleyball in northeast Nebraska and you need to be ready every time you step on the court,” said Lady Bear coach Julie Kvols. “We have great teams in our conference and we have great teams in our regional. Norfolk Catholic, Elkhorn Valley, it doesn’t matter, anyone can beat you on a given night. It’s a lot of fun and very rewarding.”

In the finals at Central City, the Lady Bears took care of Adams Central 25-16 and 25-23 to notch their 14th win of the season.

Kaida Eriksen and Rena Rasmussen paced the LCC attack with Eriksen hammering 12 kills and Rasmussen recording 11.

Kvols tipped up 27 set assists and Rasmussen recorded a double-double adding 15 digs to her match.

Tyler Recob posted nine digs and Kvols had seven.

In the second match at Central City, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took care of Boone Central, 25-23 and 25-22.

Rasmussen led a balanced hitting attack with nine kills, Eriksen added seven, Recob five and Hattie McCorkindale slammed three.

Kvols had 21 assists and matched Eriksen with eight digs apiece.

In the opening match with Wood River, the Lady Bears had little trouble, sweeping the Lady Eagles 2511 and 25-16.

Rasmussen registered 10 winners in the match, McCorkindale and Recob each had a couple of ace serves and Kvols posted 14 set assists.

Recob had 10 digs, Kvols had seven and Rasmussen and McCorkindale had two blocks at the net each.

In what was supposed to be a good regular season match with Plainview on Sept. 18, the Lady Bears kept the Lady Pirates at arm’s length all night and came away with a relatively easy, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-12 sweep.

Plainview bolted to a 2-0 lead in the opening set but a Rasmussen winner and a Recob ace serve tied the set at 2-2 then a kill by Kvols and a Plainview hitting error gave the Lady Bears a 4-2 lead.

Another Rasmussen kill and a Mc-Corkindale ace serve pushed the lead to 6-3 and another Plainview error and a McCorkindale slam made it 8-3 and caused the Lady Pirates to call a timeout.

Plainview would rattle off five consecutive points out of the timeout to tie the set at 8-8 but a Rasmussen hammer and ace serve followed by an Eriksen kill off the Plainview block and another Rasmussen ace and LCC was on its way 12-8.

The Lady Pirates got back to within 18-16 later in the set but a couple of errors and a block by Kvols and Laney Folkers at the net made it 21-16 then a Rasmussen ace pushed it to 22-16 and an Eriksen winner made it 23-16.

Another Lady Pirate error got it to set point and a Rasmussen kill from the back court ended the set and put the Lady Bears up 1-0 in the best-offive- sets match.

Kvols hit her milestone in the second set when Recob hammered a winner to make it 16-6 and later in the set Rasmussen and Eriksen hit back-to-back winners to make it 23-13 before Plainview made a couple of errors to end the set.

The third set was more of the same and LCC rolled to the 25-12 set win to take the match.

The Lady Bears were set to travel to Norfolk on Sept. 23 to take on Lutheran High Northeast before hosting Wakefield and Wynot in a triangular on Sept. 25.

Archbishop Bergan comes to Laurel Sept. 27 before the Lady Bears host Pierce on Sept. 30.
