WYNOT - For the first time in two weeks, the Randolph Cardinals hit the road for a D2 football contest with one of the top teams in the class in Nebraska.
The Blue Devils showed why they are listed towards the top of every publication across the state in Class D2, turning away the Redbirds, 67-6.
“Wynot is a great team,” said Randolph coach Mark Lech. “We struggled to string together enough offensive plays to keep the ball away from their high-scoring offense. We put together some drives but we were outmatched by them in this game.”
Wynot scored on the ground and through the air in the first quarter and the frame ended with the Blue Devils in front, 22-0.
The second 12 minutes was more of the same and the teams went to the halftime huddle with the Cards trailing 45-0.
The lead would grow to 61-0 before Ryan Engel and Milo Rayford hooked up on a 42-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to put Randolph on the scoreboard, but the outcome of the game was in little doubt.
Wynot pushed one more score across the goal line before the final gun sounded and the final score was set.
The Cards managed right at 100 yards on the ground led by Rayfords’ 71 on 16 carries. Engel ended up with four completions, the score to Rayford and completions to Bentley Reimers, Eli Bermel and Luke Harder.
Bermel paced the Cardinal defense with 10 total tackles , Ty Sievers added seven while Cole Jensen and Jaylen Junck each recorded six stops.
Engel had four solo tackles.
The Cards will hit the road again this week when they travel down to take on Bancroft-Rosalie on Sept. 26. The Panthers will bring a 3-1 record into the game with the lone loss at the hands of undefeated Neligh-Oakdale in the third week of the season.
