RANDOLPH — Melvin Dale Brunssen, 85, Randolph, died Jan. 8, 2017, at Colonial Manor, Randolph.
Visitation, with 7:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service, will be 3-8 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 12, at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, with Rev. Father Marc V. Lim, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Pierce, and Deacon Doug Tunink officiating.
Interment will be in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Randolph.
Pallbearers will be Melvin’s grandsons, Jeremy Brunssen, Lucas Brunssen, Nick Monahan, Stephen Bell, Tyler Brunssen, Grant Brunssen and Dalton Clyde.
Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin’s granddaughters, Melissa Gittins, Rebecca Green, Tanya Huwaldt, Jessica Young, Clarissa Schumacher, Sarah Blohm, Andrea Gubbels and McKenna Clyde.
Melvin was born Aug. 20, 1931, at Randolph, to Herman and Alvena (Thaden) Brunssen. He attended Cedar County Dist. #38 near Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School in 1949. After graduation, Melvin farmed with his father northeast of Randolph until his father’s death. He continued farming there his whole life. Melvin married Carol Ann Schleimer Aug. 28, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Danbury, Iowa.
He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph.
His hobbies include fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Carol Ann Brunssen, Randolph; five children, Steve and Sandi Brunssen, Henderson; Warren and Debbie Brunssen, Randolph; Alan Brunssen, Randolph; Pam and Phillip Monahan, Wayne; Carmen and Rick Clyde, Omaha; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Edward Bell, Des Moines, Iowa; three siblings, Alvin Brunssen, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Lorraine Meyer, York; Harold and Berdine Brunssen, Coleridge; two sister-in-laws, Marlene and Roger Jessen, Danbury, Iowa; Joleen and Richard Miller, Omaha.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Ramona, in 2008; two brothers-in-law, Robert Schleimer and Paul Meyer; and one sister-in-law, Marjory Brunssen.
