CROFTON — Loren Robert Schieffer, 80, Crofton, died March 5, 2017, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Constance, with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation and a Vigil Service were March 7. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at church one hour prior to services.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Schieffer, Colton Schieffer, Jacob Honkomp, Preston Leise, Greg Sudbeck and Stuart Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Loren’s grandchildren.
Loren Robert Schieffer was born to William and Anna Mary (Schumacher) Schieffer on Sept. 17, 1936, on a farm east of Crofton. He was the youngest of seven children. Loren attended elementary school at St. Joseph, Constance, for eight years and graduated from Crofton High School in 1954. When he was six years old his mother died of liver cancer. His father then married Julia Urban who helped raise the younger family. After graduation he worked at the Hartington Farm Store, then later in Laurel for his brother-in-law.
On May 27, 1958, he married Juliena Lange at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley. They made their home on a farm south of St. James for almost three years, working for area farmers. In 1961 they moved to a farm east of Crofton, and he became a dairy farmer. He served on the Crofton Creamery Board, School Board, and Mid-American Dairy Board.
Loren was active in St. Joseph’s church serving as usher, EMHC, and money counter through the years. Loren was a “Jack of All Trades” and loved to fix things. He built his home and all his farm buildings and enjoyed antique tractors. Loren was a 14 gallon blood donor.
Loren is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juliena, Crofton; five children, daughter Gwen and Dave Ptak, Hastings – (daughters Erin and Stuart Anderson, Cari and fiancé Elliot Koerting); son Marlen and Patty Schieffer, Fordyce – (children Angela and Greg Sudbeck, Emily and Preston Leise, Allison, Andrew and Colton); daughter Cheryl and Joe Honkomp, Richmond, Ind. – (children Jacob and fiancé Mandy Toney, Lisle and Lauren); son Duane and Ginger Schieffer, Constance – (children Quinn, Karley and Jack); son Brad and Sheila Schieffer, Crofton – (children Calvin, Kelsey, Grant and Layne); five great grandsons and another grandchild coming soon; sister Evelyn Stevens, Coleridge; brother-in-law Harold Sudbeck, Laurel; three nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step mom; brothers Albin and Ralph; sisters Dorothy Schieffer, Marvalle Sudbeck, Lucine and husband Dan Sanders; brother-in-law Dick Stevens; granddaughters Mollie Schieffer, Anna and Grace Schieffer.
