LA MESA, Calif — John Alan Levorson, 70, La Mesa, Calif., died Feb 24, 2017, in La Mesa, Calif.
A memorial service and interment will be 1 p.m., March 31, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Point Loma, San Diego, Calif. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., April 1, Shephard of the Valley Lutheran Church, La Mesa.
John was born in De Smet, S.D., Feb. 5, 1938, to Rev. O.L. Levorson and Agnes Satrum Levorson. His father was a Lutheran minister in De Smet, and in 1942, he was called to be the Lutheran pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hartington. John spent his elementary and secondary school years at Hartington Public Schools. He was very active in music and athletics, graduating in 1956.
After high school, he went to Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, which was also his father’s and grandfather’s alma mater. He was called up into the Army and served two years in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Gordon, Ga. He then attended and graduated from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science, Chicago, in 1964. He moved to San Diego the following year to work and train as an apprentice at Cypress View Mortuary. He was named manager at Erickson-Anderson Mortuary in La Mesa in l978, where he remained until his retirement. He served generations of families. Many families and their friends later requested his services again, as they appreciated his previous help and quality of service. Even after retiring, his services were often requested.
He was an active member of Shephard of the Valley Lutheran Church.
John loved his family; he was an artist; he enjoyed football and cars, and in his later years, he loved visiting Nebraska and Hartington.
John was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Ann.
He is survived by daughter, Stanna McDougal and her husband, Tim, La Mesa, Calif.; son, Jay Levorson, Palm Springs, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kevan and Amanda McDougal, San Diego, Calif.; a brother, David Levorson, wife, Laurie, Crete; sister, Ann Levorson Kieffer, husband, Bill Brown, Atlanta, Ga.; and nephews Dan Kieffer, Raleigh, N.C.; Doug Kieffer, Hollywood, Calif.; John Levorson, Lincoln; and Mike Rodenbough, Destin, Fla.
