Sioux Falls, S.D.— Donovan A. Asbra, 91, Sioux Falls, S.D., died Jan. 24, 2017, at Palisade Manor, Garretson, S.D.
Visitation was Jan. 27 at the funeral home prior to services.
Memorial services were held Jan. 27 at George Boom Funeral Home and Crematory, Sioux Falls.
Donovan August Asbra, son of Otto and Theresa (Buschelman) Asbra, was born Nov. 27, 1925, Fordyce. He grew up in Fordyce and Bow Valley. Don enlisted in the U.S. Army Feb. 23, 1949, and served overseas in the Luzon Peninsula. He was honorably discharged Sept. 25, 1952. Don moved to Yankton, S.D., and worked for Ryan International Harvester. Don married Darleene Sommerfeld Sept. 25, 1953, in Hartington. The couple lived and worked on a farm near Hartington before moving to Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1956. Don worked as a warehouse manager for George Sercl at Sunshine Foods until 1980. He then managed Continental Foods and later Western Warehouse before retiring in 1989.
Don was a former member of the American Legion and VFW. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Darleene Asbra; five daughters, Donna (Allen) Rogers, Stickney, S.D.; Diane (Robert) Vagstad, Sandy, Utah; Debra Asbra, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Darla Rang, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Denelda Asbra, Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Khrystina and Jared Rogers, Elyse (Justin) Henderson, Breanne (Tyler) Neal; a sister-in-law, Lois Milander, Hartington; a special friend of the family, Connie Nelson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; and four siblings, Andrew Asbra, Doris Jordan, Roberta Jorgenson and Fred Asbra.
