HARTINGTON — Derek C. Mathiason, 49, Hartington, died Jan. 4, 2017, at his residence due to complications from his diabetes.
The family received friends prior to services at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.
Memorial services were Jan. 7 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, with the Rev. Amanda Talley officiating.
Burial of his cremated remains will be at a later date.
Derek Claude Mathiason was born July 31, 1967, in Osmond, to Claude Alvin Dean and Bonnell June (Benjamin) Mathiason. Derek grew up in Hartington and graduated from Hartington High School in 1986. He graduated from Northeast Technical Community College with a degree in automotive mechanics. Derek worked in auto repair in Yankton, S.D., Crawford and O’Neill, prior to working at the Coleridge Small Engine Repair. He worked at the S&S Store and Country General Store in Hartington before he continued to do small engine repair at his residence. Derek liked to work on lawn mowers, sharpening blades, small engine repair and watching NASCAR. He liked to brag about his nieces and nephews and also liked to give people nicknames.
Derek is survived by his parents, Claude and Bonnell Mathiason, Hartington; sister, Janell, and husband, Gail Stratman, Stromsburg; two brothers, Brant (Kathy) Mathiason, Brookings, S.D., and Chad Mathiason, Hartington; seven nieces and nephews, Crystal (Derek’s goddaughter) and Dallas Schilling, Lincoln; Jordon Mathiason, Elba; Abby and Ryan (Derek’s godson) Mathiason, Brookings, S.D.; and Taylor, Morgan and Erica Stratman, Stromsburg.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, a few aunts and uncles, and two cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
