Cedar golfers win Wayne Invitational

WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic golf team claimed the title at the always-tough Wayne Invitational last week.
Cedar also competed in a triangular with Randolph and Plainview last week.
The win at Wayne is a great confidence boost.
“It’s a great accomplishment to win the Wayne Invite. This has traditionally been one of the toughest meets that we are in,” Coach Johnson said. “Blair and O’Neill are two of the best Class B teams in the state.”

The Wayne course had plenty of challenges for Cedar to contend with, Johnson said.
“The pins at Wayne were very difficult and the greens were the fastest that we have played on this year.  I felt that the kids did a good job of adjusting to the speed of the greens, and did a good job of staying below the hole on their approach shots.”
Cedar was led at Wayne by Seth Howell, who fired an 80 to finish seventh and lead the team. Eric Kruse was only two strokes back with an 82.
“Seth (Howell) played really well all day at Wayne.  Eric and Dalton both rebounded from a slow start and played really well on the back nine.   Kyle had one bad swing all day, and that cost him from medaling.  I’m proud of how these kids battled all day long,” Coach Johnson said.
Cedar fired a 331 to edge Class B Blair by one stroke and claim the team title at Wayne.
Despite the runner-up finish at Randolph, Coach Johnson was pleased with the team’s effort.
“We started off the week by playing some pretty good golf at the Plainview/Randolph triangular. I thought the kids played really well, unfortunately it wasn’t good enough to win the triangular,” Coach Johnson said. “It’s awfully hard to beat a team when they shoot three over par as a team.”
The Cedar JV team also fared well, ending their season with yet another year to finish the season with an undefeated record.
“The JV 1 team finished first in every triangular this year.  These kids have really improved this season,” Coach Johnson said.
On Monday, Cedar will compete in District competition at Beemer. Also competing at Beemer are: Crofton, David City,  Homer, Laurel-Concord, Logan View, North Bend, Oakland-Crg, Ponca, Stanton, Tekamah-Herman, Wakefield, West Pt-Beemer, and Wisner-Pilger.
