WYNOT – The Wynot Blue Devils picked up their first win of the 2011 campaign Friday with a hard-fought 28-14 win over Wausa.
Wynot used a Jackson Sudbeck-to-Chris Schmidt combination for a pair of touchdown passes and Koby Sudbeck and Brady Stratman each had a rushing touchdown to lead the Blue Devils on offense.
Wausa got rushing touchdowns from Austin Conn and Reid Friedrich to lead their offense. Koby Sudbeck and Scott Foxhoven anchored the Blue Devils’ defense with nine tackles each.
The Devils did not play error-free, but they had a solid effort Wynot Coach Steve Heimes said.
“We had some block in the back calls that gave us problems on special teams but we did a lot of the little things right on offense and defense that led to this win,” said Coach Heimes.
The Blue Devils would get on the board early in this one as on their opening drive Sudbeck found Schmidt on a crossing route and he raced 46 yards down the left sideline for the score. The PAT failed and Wynot led 6-0.
The two teams locked in a defensive battle the rest of the quarter.
At the six-minute mark of the second quarter Wynot would mount a drive. Sudbeck was the workhorse in this one as the Devils kept the ball on the ground, ate some clock and Sudbeck capped the drive with a 6-yard sweep around the left side. The PAT failed and Wynot had upped their lead to 12-0.
Wausa would come to life late in the half and behind the running of Conn and Clausen marched 55 yards in eight plays. Conn busted loose off the right side and raced 15 yard to paydirt. Conn then hit Spencer Rosberg for the PAT and the Vikings had cut the Devils lead to 12-8 at the half.
The Blue Devils’ defense continued to make the sledding tough for the Vikings in the third quarter. Some key tackles by Sudbeck, Foxhoven and Kyle Bruening kept Wausa out of their endzone. Late in the period the Blue Devils began to move the ball. This time it was Brady Stratmann as he bulled his way up the middle for runs of 6, 10 and 8 yards. Stratman would not be denied on his final carry of the series as he blasted up the middle and bowled over a Viking defender at the five-yard line to earn a 15-yard touchdown. Jackson Sudbeck connected with Nathan Wieseler on a curl pattern in the endzone for the PAT and Wynot had some breathing room at 20-8 at the end of the third quarter.
The Vikings would move the ball to open the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devil defense stiffened in the red zone and stopped them at the three-yard line on downs. Wynot would then drive the ball the length of the field. Sudbeck and Chris Schmidt again connected on a crossing pattern and Schmidt did the rest as he weaved 22 yards for the score. Sudbeck hit Davis Wieseler for the PAT and Wynot was in control 28-8.
Reserves mopped up the rest of the game. Wausa put together one last drive. Reid Friedrich capped the drive with a three-yard dive to make the final score 28-14.
Wynot hosts Chambers Friday night for a 7 p.m. game.
