Knights of Columbus celebrates 100 years

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Council of the Knights of Columbus celebrated 100 years in style here last weekend.
The Knights held a special 5:30 p.m. Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and followed that up with a banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization which helps several different charities, which includes helping youth. They are also very patriotic.
Bishop Elden Curtiss said the Hartington Knights of Columbus Council has been a real asset.
”Over the years you have been a wonderful example to the Holy Trinity community and all of the people in Hartington,” Bishop Curtiss said.
Hartington Council Grand Knight Jimmy Christensen said the local Council takes a lot of pride in its work.
“Locally we do a lot of work with ‘Right to Life’ plus other charities,” said Christensen. “We hold fund-raisers through the year.”
The Hartington council celebrated 100 years while the Knights of Columbus as an organization has been going for 125 years.

Menominee native and Cedar Catholic graduate Father Paul Hoesing gave the keynote address at the banquet. which was attended by over 150 people.
Hoesing touched on what it means to be a Catholic in today’s society and also what it means to be a member of the Knights of Columbus.
“He talked about the importance of standing up for what you believe,” said Christensen.

The local Council was chartered on May 5, 1907, with 57 people becoming charter members at that time. The first Grand Knight of the local organization was Edward Hirschman, John Gobel followed him as Grand Knight in 1909. In all 60 men have held the position of Grand Knight of Holy Trinity Council 1233.
In 1910, the local council leased a Hartington building owned by the K of C Home Corporation.
In 1912, a second story was added to the structure. In 1923, the local Council purchased the building.
